10 Cheap, Romantic Valentine's Day Ideas
81Make Your Own Inexpensive Valentine's Day Gifts
My boyfriend and I rarely spend money on Valentine’s Day. To me, people should celebrate their relationships all year long, and this particular holiday has a way of sadly leaving out about half the population. Still, if you feel you want to commemorate the occasion, don’t feel like you have to spend a lot of money just because commercialism says it should be so. Here are cheap—and romantic—Valentine’s Day ideas.
- How to Write a Valentine's Day Haiku Poem
Write a haiku for Valentine's Day. This type of poem is short and fun to write. Included are several examples.
1. Write a Poem
My boyfriend and I sometimes do something on Valentine’s Day but often do not. One thing we often have done, whether it’s Valentine’s Day or not, is jot down a little poem…in a card, typed up or not, or even on a folded over piece of paper. This is one of the sweetest, most original and romantic Valentine gifts I can think of. And it doesn’t cost a dime.
Consider writing a Valentine's Day haiku, a short form of poetry that is fun to write.
2. Make a Card
Use your own poem to write in a homemade greeting card. Use plain or colored paper, and decorate it by coloring, or attaching items such as ribbons or lace. Another option is to look at those cards at the dollar stores that are sold at two for a dollar. I’ve found some of the neatest cards there, and they sure are cheap.
3. Bake a Dessert
Baking for the occasion is another inexpensive idea. Try your hand at cookies or cupcakes from scratch or from a store-bought mix. If you want to splurge, purchase a heart-shaped cake pan or cookie cutter to shape your dessert. Top with red frosting, and even multi-colored or chocolate sprinkles for an added touch. The heart-shaped baking pan may cost you a few bucks one year, but you’ll have it every year thereafter.

4. Make Homemade Redeemable Coupons
Make a coupon booklet or just a few. Cut out your coupons on colored paper, and write on them anything you want your special one to be able to redeem over the course of the next year. Include expiration dates, if you’d like. Coupon ideas include a 30-minute massage, a homemade dinner, a baked dessert, a meal out to a restaurant of his or her choice, a free car wash, or anything else your special someone might appreciate. If you’re married with children, consider a coupon to take the kids out for an evening to give your spouse some alone time.
5. Plan a Picnic
Weather permitting, you can plan a picnic outdoors, but even in cold weather, an indoor picnic could be fun. Pack the picnic basket with sandwiches and sodas, grapes and wine, and any other type of food your heart desires. Spread out a blanket in a room full of lit candles and enjoy a romantic picnic.
6. Make Dinner at Home
You don’t have to spend money at an expensive restaurant to have a romantic dinner for two. As with the picnic, atmosphere is key with romance. Dress up, light those candles, and cook at home. Cook a simple, inexpensive meal, and splurge on the wine or champagne! Even if you do splurge for steaks, they will cost much less than if purchased at a restaurant.

7. Make a Music CD
Many of us remember making cassette tape recordings of our favorite songs. Some of us made a tape for a special someone. Hey, go back in time and record your favorite love songs for him or her, but this time you can upgrade from the cassette tape.
8. Frame a Picture
Frame a picture of the two of you together. You can even buy cute pictures frames for just a dollar at dollar stores. This inexpensive gift is a continual visual reminder of what your relationship means to each other.
9. Give Children’s Valentine’s Day Cards
Buy the valentines that kids give to each other. There is a whole box full that you can surprise your sweetie with all year long. I have used somemyself that say things like “You’re sweet” or “I miss you” and other simple expressions that I still surprise my boyfriend with now and then.

10. Give a Sentimental Something
Number ten is vague but means a lot. Pick up something at a flea market or antique store that might not cost much but means something to the person who receives it. Perhaps he or she has a special collection of unique buttons or matchbooks. Keep your eyes open all year long, and you might pick up something cheap at a yard sale. I’ve also bought things after Valentine’s Day for a fraction of their cost for the next year.
It’s really not about the amount of money one spends on Valentine’s Day. Perhaps “less is better,” as it’s the thought behind the gift that really does count.

i am interested in this hub. I oft make handmade card to present to my honey. That work was very significant.
You have some cool ideas! I especially love anything food related. Great hub!
Great ideas Vicki! I totally agree with you...a homemade gift from the heart is the best gift anyone could give (plus a side order of chocolate, ok a main course will do)! Voted UP and Awesome!!
These are all great ideas for v-day! I should do the steak and dessert this year for my hubby - he would be so happy :) Great hub - voted up and useful!
Great ideas! I will try these this year!
Very awesome ideas. Gonna try two - three points. Great hub - voted up and useful!
I like all the Valentine gifts you have cited, Victoria, but my favorites are the dessrt (chocolate or chocolate chip cookies would be nice) and the handmade coupon books. They would be unique and very special. Thank you for these notable reminders.
Bunch of good ideas, victoria.
Thanks to you..I might write a poem for my better half this valentine :)
voted up as brilliant and awesome!!
My husband and I don't spend a lot of money on Valentine's Day either. It's the thought that counts. Thanks for all of the great suggestions and for linking to my greeting card hub.
All great ideas for making the day meaningful. I like the picnic suggestion.
When I read the title I thought, you have used cheap word in derogatory sense. LOL
Well your article is very interesting in a sense that we don't have to be very rich when it comes to gift our lovers. Thanks for sharing these wonderful ideas.
All your ideas are quite affordable and I believe that we all love your idea. I believe that "Valentines Day" will looks so beautiful. Thanks for share with us. Rated up!
Love and peace, Prasetio
Great ideas! I could choose one or two or pick them all! Lol
Voted up:) I LOVED it!
Thanks Victoria for your great ideas, many people don't have the money for expensive gifts this year with the sting of the recession, your ideas are very helpful.
These are really cute ideas. Now I just need to corner the guy I am dating for Valentine's Day so we can do some of these activities. Voted up!
These are so great! You should definitely add your ideas to this list of Cupid on a Budget..I would love a poem as a gift on Valentine's Day :) http://www.skinnyscoop.com/list/TheBudgetDiet/cupi
Great inexpensive and many meaningful ideas- love them. I remember how much fun I had handwriting out the valentine's to all my classmates and family when we were kids. It was something I looked forward to every year!
I have got all except the 4, 8 and 9... But not as Valentines gift. I have always looked at the feelings or affection of the person than the value of a gift and anything done for me means a lot to me.
Very useful hub Victoria. It should help keep me out of trouble!
I wanted to add one thing- a tradition my mom started with my sister and I when we were young- for my kids I do a valentine's day scavenger hunt. Little notes and clues around the house that they have to follow for their prize. But the rules are- they have to work together... There are clues that apply to only one of them so to reach the end all three have to cooperate. My husband and I do not do anything for each other- out gift is to watch the kids as they scramble through the house .. The oldest is now 16 and still enjoys the challenge. Of course as they get older the hunt has to be harder. The prizes very on the budget for the year... One year it was very simple a little heart box of chocolates for each of them. One year they got a wii game to share... Although they like the prize - you can tell they really enjoy the hunt :)
These all idea's seems nice before marriage. After 6 years of wedding, it's good to do some earning work rather than to spend time in these rib rab things. I am sorry but it's my own thinking. Oh !
Let me say thanks for sharing.
Best ideas I have come across, others have been so cheesy! I don't agree with 'adomcruze' I have been with my boyfriend for 8 years and my favorite gifts are always his love letters and handmade things, he buys more commercial things throughout the entire year so it's nice to get something cute like this every so often! :)
I love these ideas! Great hub, voted up up and up!
great idea...
