I'm Becoming my Mom! - a Mother's Day Poem
84Mommy's Little Girl?
I love my mother. She was my rock growing up, my supporter, my confidante, my best friend. Now, I’m a woman. I take care of myself. I rely on myself. I'm all grown up now. But am I really? Or am I still that little girl that longed to be with her mother, depending on her for attention, support, and protection, among a lot of other things...?
Me as a little girl
Bruises and Boo-Boos
Bruises and boo-boos
Gossip and lies--
The woman just smiles
As the little girl cries.
Hot chocolate and Mommy
On wet, rainy days--
The woman sits quietly
As the little girl plays.
Mud pies and Barbies
And Timey-Tell dolls--
The woman stands strong
As the little girl falls.
Harsh words and secrets
And Daddy’s good-byes—
The woman moves on
As the little girl hides.
Tears and confusion
And unexplained sighs--
The woman grows up
As the little girl dies.

Mom and Me at Our College Graduation
Mom and Me Down by the River
There! I’ve finished another little poem
About a little girl growing up,
Just like I have—
Or so I think…sometimes.
My mom is proud of me.
I’m a grown woman.
I have a house, a car,
A job that pays well.
I’m strong and independent,
Can support myself and
Make my own decisions—
Just like she taught me.
And I can speak my mind
And question her logic
And disagree, sometimes sternly,
Because of what she’s made me.
She touched my heart and conscience
That often work against me.
Sometimes it’s too much to care so much…
And who do I turn to?
I have friends and siblings
And a guy for many years.
And I cherish and need them,
Yet Mom often I run to…Dadgummit!
How silly I am
When suddenly my eyes
Usually tough and dry
Tear up when I think of Mom.
Thank God for My Mother
Do we ever really NOT need our mothers? I believe the answer is a big, fat NO! I hurt for those who did not have a wonderful, caring mother who instilled in them a sense of right and wrong, self-worth, independence and drive, and all the other important qualities that sends a child out to be successful in the world. And love, love, love—so much unconditional love that you know that no matter what you do in this world, that you can always go back, even if it’s on your knees, to that mother who would stand up to anybody for you and even go the distance to die for you. I have that kind of a mother. Not everyone can say that...and that hurts me for them. A loving mother is a great gift, especially when she becomes your best friend.
I’m in my 40s now. I will need my mother in my 50s…and in my 60s...and even my 70s. I have visions of my mom in her 100s (she’s very healthy!) and me in my 80s. And I will still be her little girl. I will still need her. I will still ask her for advice. And I will still need for her to comfort me, as any little girl would.
Yeah, she’s still here
But too far away
And visits become fewer
As life becomes fuller.
What do I do now, Mom?
Why did he do that, Mom?
Why is life so hard, Mom?
Am I doing the right thing?
Aren’t I tougher than that?
Can’t I do it on my own?
Sure I can—and I will!
But is that what Mom would do?
Gosh—sometimes I catch myself
Saying phrases she says
Giving advice she has given—
Did you brainwash me, Mom?
Sometimes I’ll even look over,
Catch a reflection in the mirror,
The turn of the smile, the eyes—
It’s my mother. It’s my mother!
God, I’m becoming my mother!
Does any girl think that will happen?
Oh, God, I’m becoming my mother!
Thank God I’m becoming my mother.
Thank God…’cause there’s nothing better.
Thank God for my Mother

Hauntingly beautiful. How lucky you are to have your mother, and what an inspiring tribute to her. Voted up, awesome, beautiful and interesting.
Really beautiful Victoria! This one really hit home for me since I have started saying some of my mother's famous sayings! Loved it - voted up!
Oh my dear Victoria...this is an amazing and true account of a daughter's memory, appreciation, recognition, fear of, respect for, deference to, reverence for, awe of, honor of , envy of, disagreement with, consideration of and love for her mother. We all go through that time...and it repeats itself often, when we catch our mother in our own reflection..when we hear her in our words, when we muse over options, opinions and moods as she did. We see that gleam in our eye which is a mirror image of her...we are her daughter...forever and always.
WOW! This is a number ONE A-ONE FIRST CLASS flight into the mind and heart of women ... and the spirit of our relationship with our mother and she with us.
Love the entroduction and the poetry which, upon reflection; you then turn to prose....artistically and beautifully written.
ALL UPS my dear!!!!!
Kathy
It is too funny. All those things I vowed never to say to my children are just popping out of my mouth lately. I never knew how wise that woman was until I had my own kids. ;-)
How very beautiful and expressive! It's so easy to take things for granted, even the most important and influential people in our life! A loving, caring mother who makes sacrifices for her children and who is always there for them is a true blessing. Sadly though, there are those who have grown up without a mother because of death or neglect, or other obstacles. Or they have mothers who are struggling with things like drug addiction and mental issues, and it's so sad that some people are robbed of the all the love a mother has to offer.
This is really a great poem..Thanks
A beautiful poem: your mother could not hope for a better gift than this tribute to her and your relationship: has inspired me to reflect on my own mother and send her a similar message, just to remind her how much she means to me.
Nobody can give advice quite like a mother! I always think of my mum as 'the wise woman'!!
A beautiful poem and lovely, lovely hub, thank you for sharing.

You were so lucky to have such a mother. I can only imagine. I enjoyed how the adult in the poem was still a little girl inside with all the needs and wants of a little girl but having to act big. Excellent poem.
I look like my mom who looks like her mom; my daughter favors me and she knows it, kids about it...and then says, "I love you.".
Your "the woman grows up as the little girl dies" hit me in the heart. Such poignent expression. The song was beautiful and though I didn't know anyone, each one was special to watch as he sang. Thanks for a great hub!
Awesome poem about your bond with your Mom. You are both blessed. I miss my mom everyday...my daughter and granddaughter keep me grounded though:)
Victoria, This is very emotional poem. The way you have told the story of growing up years is really touching. It is when we are in front of our parents that we become children once again no matter how much grown up we are. Thanks for sharing.
With warm wishes,

'My Mother's Hands'
I remember…
Your tender hands
comforting me
when my hands are hurt
Your healing massage
flowing through my feet
when my fever are high
Your attentive hands
swinging the cradle
during my baby years
Your strict hands
waving that scary stick
raising us to be responsible
Your concern look
after that slap
which taught me to be mature
Your protectiveness
which came from your deep intent
to keep us safe
Your gentle hands
working non-stop
to put food on the table
Your playful heart
knowing how to survive
through adversity and trials
Your doubts and worries
when matters at hands
are closest to your heart
Your resilient strength
continuing to hold a light
for us when all is dark
Your harsh words
may seem like thorns
when we were children
Your temperament
we are learning to accept
now that we are adults
We are learning to accept
because you are our beloved mom
our one and only mom

This is so very beautiful. Mother's are very special. Loved the hub.
Such a cute little girl!
And the poem, breathtakingly deep, poignant, heartfelt. You can see and hear everything in between the lines. So beautiful, thank you for sharing...
What a touching, beautiful poem and hub and I love that you included the personal photos.
Your mom sounds like an amazing woman and a great example for you.
How cool that she went back to college along with you and your brother.
You can see by the body language in the photos how close you and your mom are.
Voted up across the board except for funny.
Oh Victoria,
This hub was so very special. What a beautiful young lady you were and are still. Your mom and you look so much alike and the pictures say it all..the love you have for eachother. My girls are 31 and 24 and are my best of friends. We as moms always want our daughters to be independent and strong...I do too see a glimpse of my mom as I pass by the mirror..it is amazing..Thank you for sharing this heartfelt hub. Your love for your mom shines through.

Great Poem!!! I think we all of "little girls" become our mom when we grow up. I don't think we realize it unless we move away from our mom or our mom is no longer with us. Even though my mom is still here, there are a few things that I know I am like her, but since my grandmother has passed, my mother and I both can see how mom is like her mom. It is funny how as moms, we can see how much our daughter's are like us, but as daughter's, we can't see how much we are like mom until they aren't with us any longer.
I am continually telling my daughter that is so mom, she so disagrees.
What a wonderful tribute to your mother. It was so beautiful and very touching. I love your poetry.
Thanks for the nice poem ..nice reading that
This poem made me really emotional. Thank you Victoria!
Hi Victoria Lynn, This is so true. I am also becoming my mother but instead of seeing this as a negative thing I'm starting to see it as a more positive experience. I guess that's just part of growing up. Thanks for sharing. Take care, Kelley

Dear Victoria,
Yes you are..and will become your mom. My sister told me..there is this person that bumped into me, and never saw him again. "You see those hands? those are your mom's hands in you. You see you...or you feel every beat of your heart as we talk or read? That's your mom's heart beating with you. Ever talk to each other...and as you both reach a matureness, sometimes end up saying the same word.." My sister told him, how did he know? He just walked by and saw in her eyes things nobody could see. Then he dissapeared in the middle of the night. So, Whether is genes or connectivity. There is a link for life. And is stronger in women, indeed. Your poems are so touching I jump back and forth and our mind can't keep up, when you take us back in time. And you dear friend were a beautiful little momma's girl...and you still do!
