I Love Fried Egg Sandwiches!

If you have never had a fried egg sandwich, then you haven't yet lived! Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but if you've had a fried egg sandwich, then you know what I'm talking about. Fried egg sandwiches are a meal in themselves, easy to make with readily available ingredients (most likely), and always satisfying.

The basic fried egg sandwich on toasted bread and mayonnaise, with a piece of your choice of cheese, is incredible. You can experiment with adding other items such as ham, bacon, or even onion, but you really don't have to. The fried egg sandwich is pure in itself-- purely delicious!

Yields: 1 sandwich for one person

Ingredients for Fried Egg Sandwich

  • 1 egg, 2 if you're really hungry
  • 2 slices bread, wheat, rye, or other
  • 1 Tbsp. (at least!) mayonnaise, (or Miracle Whip, for MW fans!)
  • 1 slice cheese, American, Cheddar, Swiss, ANY!
  • meat, veggie, or other, optional

Instructions

  1. Spray pan with non-stick cooking spray. Crack and plop large egg into pan.
  2. As egg starts to cook, break out the yolk and spread it out a bit so that the yolk won't be dripping all over your sandwich.
  3. Sprinkle salt and pepper onto your cooking egg.
  4. Turn with spatula after a minute or so before egg is finished cooking. Salt and pepper lightly on other side, if you wish. Only cook another minute or so before removing from heat.
  5. While egg is cooking, toast bread to desired color--or don't toast bread. I often do either way. Add mayonnaise. If you don't like mayonnaise, consider Miracle Whip, mustard or butter as an optional spread.
  6. Add your choice of cheese slice. Put sandwich together. Unless you want to add optional ingredients, you are done!

Optional Ingredients for Fried Egg Sandwich

This egg sandwich is so good that I rarely add any extra ingredients. If you do want to deviate from the basic fried egg sandwich, here are some ideas.

  • slice of ham
  • sausage patty
  • 2 or 3 slices of bacon
  • one slice of cold cut (as in first photo in hub)
  • large onion slice
  • pickle slices
  • slices of banana peppers

You can also add an extra egg or vary the choice of cheese or bread type. Sometimes my boyfriend makes an overflowing egg sandwich that focuses on the eggy taste: two eggs with the fried goodness falling over the sides of the bread. He omits the cheese in this case. But don't forget the mayonnaise!

I like the idea of a significant amount of protein and calcium starting off my day. And the sandwich is just good!

Are Eggs Bad for my Cholesterol?

How much have we heard the research go back and forth on whether or not eggs are bad for our health? As far as cholesterol, a large egg has about 186 milligrams of cholesterol. According to Dr. Behrenbeck at the Mayo Clinic, a person who has high cholesterol should limit their cholesterol intake to about 200 milligrams. The limit for someone without issues should be around 300. He recommends that you watch your cholesterol intake the rest of the day after eating an egg--or egg yolk, rather, as the yolks are where the cholesterol lurks.

Dang--I guess my three-egg omelets might be a no-no. Well, I don't eat eggs everyday, and my mom always said to take "everything in moderation." So I'm okay with my occasional egg sprees. Seriously, though, your cholesterol intake should be between you and your doctor, so you might want to check with him or her if you haven't.
